Okay, there seems to be a lot of misunderstanding about how crit and crit mods work on pistols, and I'm here to clear some of that up. First off, most secondaries straight up don't have good enough critical stats for a critical build to be worthwhile. The Aklex is one secondary that not only IS viable with a crit build, but is significantly superior with one. The first thing you need to understand that is deceptive about critical math is that the crit damage multiplier is not bonus damage on a crit, it's total damage on a crit, meaning that even though a 2. Because of this, critical damage mods multiply total damage for a crit , while critical chance mods multiply only bonus damage on a crit. Make sense? Because of this, critical damage will always be in parentheses like 2. With Pistol Gambit, you get 2. With Target Cracker, you get 0. The two mods actually increase damage output on the Aklex by an equal amount. The third trick with crit mods involves multiplicative versus additive scaling. I wanted to say here to visualize damage as a three dimensional volume, but in reality it's 5 dimensional, due to multi shot and elementals, and critical chance is overlapping backwards on all the other damage axis and has another dimension of depth purely to itself for total crit damage, so it's really not a good thing to try to visualize, because you'll do it wrong, almost guaranteed. Anyways, picture a fairly long rectangle. If you increase the length of it, you increase the surface area by a little, but if you increase the width of it you increase the surface area by a LOT. You can think of the X axis as Critical chance although it overlaps regular damage and the Y axis as total critical damage which also overlaps regular damage, but overlaps it completely and extends off farther. If you increase one of these value, you get a bit more surface area. If you were to overlap a rectangle shaped like if you had increased the other crit value, you would only be covering part of the area covered by an increase in both values simultaneously. In effect, critical damage and critical chance over-synergize. They are literally more than the sum of their parts. Combine the two and you get 2. You're right, crit mods over-synergize. If you're going to use one, you're wasting part of its potential unless you use both. Rule of thumb for crit build viability for secondaries is to subtract 1 from the crit damage, then multiply it by the crit chance, and if the number you get is lower than 0. If it's lower than 0. There aren't actually any secondaries at the moment that come out to 0. Thing is That's great on paper but I'd think most people go for crit chance over damage simply because of reasons of reliability although you've generally just put numbers behind the general notion that people have of 'If I'm gonna boost one, might as well boost both if I can. It's really not a very noticeable difference there, except in the case of the brakk and pyrana since the whole critical chance thing is applied to each pellet, so you'll see a much closer to average crit rate in a shorter amount of time on those two. Yes, but what does crit chance do? It's a randomized chance to get a crit, which is an increase in damage equal to the weapon's crit multiplier minus one because 1. People look at me and say Thats overall BUT with crit mods you need to proc a crit to make it worth. Unless its a heavy crit build, like bows, its not worth getting it, because its always better to have more stable damage. It's mostly going to crit x with 3 bullets flying each shot. The crit damage for secondaries is actually a lot more stable than you'd think. I personally like the Akmagnus, because you can fire them a lot faster accurately, and can kind of take out nullifiers with them, which I imagine are a supreme pain with the Aklex, kind of like with the Sybaris, which I would never use anything but except for the fact that you have to reload to take out a nullifier, always. I usually stayed away from crit build on secondaries because I didn't know how to exactly calculate the damage increase of the mods by myself. So thx for all the maths and taking the time to be educational. AkLex crit build is amazing, you can take it anywhere, headshots are just a faster bonus and the fire rate is irrelevant. You don't need to use bad manners to disagree with something. But like my grandma says: "Education comes from the cradle". If I had an extra slot on the Aklex and wanted to put a critical mod in, of course it would be a critical damage. Although I love Target Cracker for some builds, there are others where Status is just the better way to go. Two reasons: 1: Because a lot of people seem to think that there are no viable crit secondaries. It's sad that I have to say it again, but if you have enough multishot and secondaries have a LOT middling-low crit numbers are actually quite consistent. You'd know that though if you'd ever actually used any of the crit secondaries. Thanks for the defense, but I have to point out that crit chance doesn't quite work like that over multi shot. You have to multiply for each step in the chance to achieve a particular outcome to get the end totals, like this:. This is the chance for any particular shot, not one out of three. Only the first out of three shots will crit, so the chance for one shot to crit multiplied by the chances for the last two shots not to crit, or: 0. You end up with kind of a curve if you graph it, especially with shotgun pistols like the brakk or pyrana that have pellets per multishot. For single-projectile pistols though:. I for one would not build either Marelok for crit, since they are slightly inaccurate, even across medium sized rooms, you can easily find yourself missing those headshots over and over and over, especially in tight situations.
