This happens because it only needs 3 digits to open a lock - if you are a team of 4 people or more it is just a matter of minutes and you have the combination. Now it is possible to change downgrade and upgrade again combination locks. Which means that bruteforcing does not just open a door - it let's you change the combination. The fact that players would rather crack the lock then break down the wall shows that it is working as we intended. Just to point out another thing you have not considered is that, the current base building is Level 1 wood, Level 2 Cinder we are not even done flushing out the levels yet and a "better" lock maybe in the works. Good - but like i mentioned above Plot Poles don't affect downgrading things.
